"Water-Soluble", "Nano", "Liposomal": Formulation Words on a CBD Label
These three words describe how an extract has been dispersed into a liquid. None of them is a defined category, none is a potency tier, and none of them is something a certificate of analysis measures.
They sit in an awkward place on a label: they sound technical, they refer to real formulation techniques, and the reason they are printed on the front of the package is almost always a claim about absorption. This post explains what each word denotes as vocabulary. It does not evaluate the absorption claim, because that is a question about what happens in a body, which this site does not answer.
Why the words exist at all
Cannabinoids are fat-soluble. A cannabinoid extract dropped into water separates rather than dissolving, which is why the standard dropper-bottle product suspends the extract in a fat instead — the carrier oil, decoded in carrier oils on a label.
Formulators who want a cannabinoid in something watery — a drink, a shot, a thin lotion — therefore have to do something extra to keep it dispersed. The three words on the label are three ways of naming that extra step. What each one means in practice is where the precision runs out.
What each word denotes
Nanoemulsion / “nano”. An emulsion is a stable mixture of oil and water held together by an emulsifier. “Nano” indicates that the oil droplets have been reduced to a very small size, which is what stops the mixture separating and often what makes it look clear rather than milky. There is no consumer-market standard defining how small a droplet must be before a product may be called nano, so the word tells you the technique and not a specification.
Liposomal. A liposome is a vesicle with a lipid shell — the extract sits inside an enclosure made of fat molecules rather than being dispersed as free droplets. Again, a real technique with a real definition in formulation science, and again no consumer-market threshold for how much of the extract must actually be encapsulated before the word is printed on the box.
Water-soluble. The loosest of the three, and strictly a misnomer. The extract has not become soluble in water; it has been formulated so it disperses in water without separating. Treat the phrase as an umbrella term covering the two techniques above, plus any others a manufacturer has used, plus in some cases nothing but marketing.
The pattern worth holding on to: all three name a process, none names a result, and processes are not quality grades. That is the same conclusion reached about the extraction vocabulary in CO2, ethanol, distillate, and it holds for exactly the same reason.
What shows up in the ingredients list
The formulation step leaves traces you can read. On a product using one of these words, look below the panel at “other ingredients”:
- Emulsifiers. Lecithin, sunflower or soy lecithin, polysorbates, quillaja extract, gum acacia and similar entries. Something has to hold the dispersion together, and it will be named here.
- Phospholipids, on a liposomal product, since that is what the shell is made of.
- Glycerin, propylene glycol, or other co-solvents.
- A water or juice base, if the product is a beverage rather than a concentrate.
An ingredients list with none of these on a product claiming to be water-soluble is worth noticing. So is “proprietary blend” in the position where the emulsifier should be — an absence rather than a disclosure, which is the category of red flag covered in red flags on a CBD label.
What the certificate does and does not tell you
A batch certificate reports what compounds are present and at what concentration. That is the same information for a nanoemulsified product as for an oil, and you read it the same way — the section walkthrough is in how to read a certificate of analysis.
What no standard certificate panel reports:
- Droplet size, or any distribution of it.
- Encapsulation efficiency — how much of the extract is actually inside the liposomes.
- Stability over time, or whether the dispersion has separated since testing.
- Anything about absorption.
So a certificate cannot confirm or contradict the word on the front of the package. It can confirm the cannabinoid content, and that is a different question. This is the recurring shape of the whole category: the report settles contents, and the front of the box makes claims the report was never designed to address — the same asymmetry documented for the “entourage” claim.
The absorption claim, and why we stop here
Products carrying these words almost always pair them with a statement about being absorbed better, faster, or more completely than an oil. That is a claim about what happens in a body.
This site does not evaluate those claims, quantify them, compare formats on them, or cite literature about them. There is no hedged version of that discussion available here — the site’s boundary is what is in the container and what the words mean, and absorption is on the other side of it. If it matters to your situation, it is a conversation for a pharmacist, and the questions worth taking to one are collected separately.
What you can do from the label alone is check that everything else on it holds up.
Where these products differ on the rest of the label
Three practical knock-on effects, all of them label-reading rather than pharmacology.
The serving unit often changes. A water-dispersible product is frequently sold as a beverage, a shot, or a stick pack, so the serving is a container or a sachet rather than a dropper volume. Which means the reconciliation between the front figure and the back panel works differently — the arithmetic is in what the big number on the front counts and the panel fields in why CBD labels look like supplement labels.
Concentrations are usually lower per unit volume, simply because the product is mostly water. That makes a straight comparison against an oil’s figure misleading unless you are comparing concentrations rather than container totals.
The category word still applies. Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate describe the extract that went into the emulsion, and they behave exactly as documented in full spectrum vs. broad spectrum. A nanoemulsion made from an isolate is still an isolate product. The formulation word and the spectrum word answer different questions, and both should be present.
Checklist
- Treat the word as a process description, not a grade or a strength.
- Read the ingredients list for the emulsifier. Its absence is more informative than its presence.
- Establish the spectrum category separately — the formulation word does not imply one.
- Convert the cannabinoid figure to a concentration before comparing to an oil.
- Get the batch-matched certificate and read it exactly as you would any other.
- Do not expect the certificate to speak to the formulation claim. It does not measure that.
- Take absorption questions to a pharmacist, not to a label and not to this site.
