CO2, Ethanol, Distillate: Extraction Words on a CBD Label

Extraction words on a label describe the process used to separate cannabinoids from plant material. The common ones are CO2 extraction, ethanol extraction, hydrocarbon extraction, and lipid or oil infusion — followed by refinement steps with their own vocabulary, such as winterisation, decarboxylation, and distillation.

None of these words is a quality grade. Each process can be run well or badly. What the process name does tell you is which contaminant is worth checking for on the lab report, which makes it a genuinely useful line to read.

The four extraction routes

  • CO2 extraction. Carbon dioxide under pressure is used as the solvent, often labelled “supercritical CO2” or “subcritical CO2” depending on the conditions. Its selling point on labels is that the solvent turns back into a gas and leaves, so there is little residual solvent to remove.
  • Ethanol extraction. Food-grade alcohol as the solvent. Efficient at scale and widely used. Ethanol pulls out a broad range of compounds, including plant waxes and chlorophyll, so it usually requires more cleanup afterwards.
  • Hydrocarbon extraction. Butane, propane, or a blend. Labels rarely advertise this on consumer CBD products, though the terms appear on lab reports as residual-solvent lines. Done properly the solvent is purged; the residual solvent panel is where that gets confirmed.
  • Lipid or oil infusion. Plant material heated in a fat — often olive or coconut oil — which dissolves the cannabinoids directly. Labels describe this as “oil infused” or “lipid extraction”. It is the least industrial route and produces the least concentrated extract, which is why it is uncommon at scale.

You will also see “solventless” and “solvent-free”. These are not synonyms. Solventless usually means no solvent was used at all, which for CBD products effectively means infusion. Solvent-free is more often a claim about the finished product containing no detectable residual solvent, which is a claim the lab report can check.

The refinement words that come after

Extraction produces a crude oil. What happens next has its own label vocabulary, and these words are often mistaken for extraction methods.

  • Winterisation. The crude extract is chilled in alcohol so fats and waxes drop out and can be filtered off. This is why “winterised” appears on labels alongside a CO2 or ethanol claim rather than instead of one.
  • Decarboxylation. Heating to convert acidic precursors into their neutral forms — CBDA to CBD, THCA to THC. Whether and how much this has happened is visible on a report as the balance between acidic and neutral rows, which is the same mechanism behind total THC versus delta-9 THC.
  • Distillation. Separating compounds by boiling point under vacuum, producing a “distillate” — a thick, high-cannabinoid oil. “CBD distillate” on a label means a concentrated extract, not a purified single compound.
  • Chromatography. Separating compounds by how they move through a medium. This is the step used to strip THC out of a whole extract, and therefore the step that makes broad spectrum possible.
  • Crystallisation. The final purification that yields isolate.

Read as a sequence, the words stop looking like competing claims: extract, clean up, convert, concentrate, and optionally strip or purify.

What the process name does not tell you

Three things, all of which get implied anyway:

  • It does not tell you the extract is clean. A CO2 extraction from contaminated plant material yields a contaminated extract. Extraction does not remove heavy metals that the plant took up from soil.
  • It does not tell you no solvent remains. CO2 processing usually involves ethanol somewhere in the refinement chain — winterisation, for instance, uses it. A “CO2 extracted” label is compatible with a residual ethanol figure on the report.
  • It does not tell you the product is stronger, purer, or better. Those are measured properties, reported on a certificate, not implied by a method name.

The label claim “gently extracted” or “clean extraction” is marketing language with no defined meaning. Treat it the way you would treat any adjective on a package: as a statement of intent by the seller.

The panel that actually checks the extraction

Residual solvents. This is the panel on a certificate of analysis that tests for solvent traces left behind, and it is the one panel directly connected to the extraction claim.

  • Which solvents are screened is listed on the report. A well-built panel covers a standard list including ethanol, butane, propane, hexane, and several others, each with a specification limit and a pass or fail.
  • A pass against a stated limit is the useful result. Measured values with no limits to compare them against are much less informative — a point covered in more depth in how to read a certificate of analysis.
  • A missing residual-solvent panel on a product advertising a specific extraction method is a gap worth noticing. The claim is being made and not evidenced.

The complementary panel is heavy metals, because hemp readily takes up metals from soil. That one is about the crop rather than the process, and no extraction method substitutes for it.

Why “food grade” and “pharmaceutical grade” are different kinds of words

Extraction claims frequently travel with grading language. Be careful with it.

“Food grade ethanol” is a real and meaningful specification for an input material. “Pharmaceutical grade CBD”, by contrast, has no agreed consumer-market definition; it is not a certification a CBD supplement obtains, and it appears on packaging as a positioning term. The same goes for “medical grade”. Both belong on the list of label red flags — not because such products are necessarily bad, but because the phrase does not carry information.

The checklist

  1. Find the extraction word and note which of the four routes it describes.
  2. Separate extraction from refinement. Winterised, distilled, and chromatographed are downstream steps, not alternatives.
  3. Go straight to the residual-solvent panel and check it exists, names solvents, and states limits.
  4. Check the heavy-metals panel too, which extraction does not address.
  5. Discount grading adjectives unless they refer to a defined specification.
  6. Do not read a process name as a strength or purity claim — those figures are on the cannabinoid panel, and what they mean for a bottle is arithmetic covered in what the number on the front counts.
