Total THC vs. Delta-9 THC: Why Lab Reports Show Two Numbers
Delta-9 THC is what the sample contains right now. Total THC is what it would contain if the acidic precursor in it were converted by heat. Both can be correct for the same batch, and total THC is usually the higher of the two.
That gap is the single most misread thing on a certificate of analysis. A product can look compliant against one figure and not against the other, and a reader who does not know which column they are looking at cannot tell.
The chemistry, in the amount needed to read a label
Hemp does not primarily produce THC. It produces an acidic form, THCA, which converts to THC when heated — a reaction called decarboxylation. The same relationship exists on the CBD side, where CBDA is the acidic precursor to CBD.
So a raw sample contains some delta-9 THC plus some THCA that has not converted. If that material is later heated — baked, smoked, vaporised — a portion of the THCA becomes delta-9 THC. Total THC is a calculated figure that accounts for this: it adds the measured delta-9 THC to a converted proportion of the measured THCA.
The conversion is not one-for-one, because THCA is a heavier molecule than THC and loses mass in the reaction. Reports therefore apply a multiplier to the THCA figure before adding it. You will see the formula written out on some certificates, and the multiplier is a fixed value derived from the molecular weights rather than something a lab chooses.
What this looks like on a certificate
On a well-formatted report you will see rows something like this, each with its own result:
- delta-9 THC — measured directly.
- THCA (sometimes written delta-9 THCA or THCA-A) — measured directly.
- Total THC — calculated from the two above.
Some reports show all three. Some show only delta-9. Some show only a “Total THC” line with no breakdown. And some label a single column simply “THC” without saying which of the three it is, which is the version that causes trouble.
If a report gives you only one figure and does not say which, you do not have the information you think you have. Look for the calculation note, usually in small print near the panel, or for the THCA row elsewhere in the table. The section-by-section walkthrough covers where these notes usually sit.
Why the difference is not academic
Legal frameworks that define hemp do so against a THC threshold, and different frameworks have been written against different versions of that measurement. Some are written against delta-9 THC. Some are written against total THC. Some have been amended from one to the other. The result is that the same batch, with the same report, can sit on different sides of a line depending on which jurisdiction’s definition is being applied and which figure it names.

The other reason to care: what a test looks for
Workplace drug testing does not look for CBD and does not look for THCA. It looks for a metabolite the body produces after processing delta-9 THC — the mechanism described in does CBD show up on a drug test.
That means the total-THC figure is not directly the figure a testing question turns on, but it is not irrelevant either, because THCA that converts before or during consumption becomes the compound that does get metabolised. Which of the two figures is more relevant depends on the product format and how it is used, and it is not a question a label can answer for you. If a test outcome has consequences for you, the honest position is that a low delta-9 figure alone does not settle it, and neither does a “hemp-derived” description.
Units, dry weight, and the other easy misread
Two more things sit next to these figures and change what they mean.
- Units. Cannabinoid results appear as percentages by weight (% w/w), as milligrams per gram, or as milligrams per millilitre. The same result expressed in different units looks like a wildly different number. Check the unit before comparing two reports.
- Dry weight basis. Legal thresholds for plant material are typically written against dry weight, meaning moisture is excluded from the calculation. A result reported “as received” on a moist sample is not directly comparable to a dry-weight threshold. Finished products such as oils and edibles introduce a further wrinkle, because a per-container figure and a per-gram concentration are different measurements of the same batch — see what the number on the front counts.
When the report says “ND”
A THC row showing ND means the result was below the laboratory’s detection limit, not that the figure is zero. This applies to delta-9 and THCA rows independently: a report can show delta-9 as non-detect while THCA carries a measurable value, in which case the total THC figure is not non-detect at all.
That combination is common enough to be worth checking specifically on anything sold as THC-free or as an isolate. The longer explanation of detection limits and what they do and do not license you to conclude is in the non-detect post.
The checklist
- Find out how many THC rows the report has. Delta-9, THCA, total THC — or an unlabelled single column.
- If there is only one figure, establish which one it is before doing anything with it. A calculation note or a missing THCA row usually tells you.
- Note the units and whether the result is dry weight or as received.
- Read the detection limit beside any ND.
- Work out which figure your own situation turns on — a legal threshold, a workplace policy, or neither — and get that question answered by someone qualified to answer it rather than by the packaging.
If the product’s paperwork will not support that exercise, the honest conclusion is that the THC content is not known to you, which is a different situation from knowing it is low.
