Gummies vs. Oil: What Changes on the Label

Between a dropper bottle and a jar of gummies, four things on the label change: the serving unit becomes a discrete piece, the ingredients list gets much longer, the front-of-pack figure is calculated differently, and the batch report is testing a different kind of object.

What does not change is the vocabulary describing the extract itself. Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate mean the same things in both formats.

This post is a format comparison of the two labels. It is not a comparison of the two formats’ effects, which is a question about a body rather than about a package, and therefore not something this site answers.

The serving unit

This is the largest single difference, and most of the others follow from it.

An oil’s serving is a volume. The panel should state it as a measured volume — a millilitre figure or a full dropper — because a “drop” is not a reliable unit. Drop size depends on the dropper, the viscosity of the carrier, and how the bottle is held. A panel that gives its serving only in drops has given you a soft unit, and every figure calculated from it inherits that softness.

A gummy’s serving is a countable object. One piece, or sometimes two. This is the firmest serving definition in the category: there is no measurement step and no technique, so the panel’s arithmetic is unusually clean.

That firmness is a labelling property, not a recommendation. The front-of-pack figure

Both formats print a large number on the front, and in both cases it is usually the container total rather than the amount in one serving. The arithmetic trap is the same one documented in what the big number on the front counts — but it resolves differently in each format.

On an oil, the useful derived figure is a concentration: content per unit volume. That is the only version of the number comparable across bottle sizes.

On gummies, the useful derived figure is content per piece, obtained by dividing the container total by the piece count. Two jars advertising the same large number can hold very different pieces if one contains twice as many, and the front of the package does not make that obvious.

So the reconciliation step differs: with an oil you divide by volume, with gummies you divide by count. In both cases the number on the front is the least informative figure on the package until you have done it.

The ingredients list

An oil is a short list — an extract and a carrier, sometimes a flavouring. A short list is a good sign rather than a suspicious one, and the carrier is decoded in carrier oils on a label.

A gummy is a confection, so its list is long by necessity. Fields worth reading:

  • The gelling agent. Pectin or gelatin. This is the entry that determines whether the product suits a vegetarian or vegan diet, and it is frequently the reason someone is reading the list at all.
  • Sweeteners. Sugars, syrups, or sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols in particular are something some people need to know about, and they are named in this list and nowhere else on the package.
  • Acids and flavourings, often listed generically as “natural flavours”.
  • Colourings, which in some markets carry additional mandatory labelling.
  • Allergens, usually restated in a separate statement as well as in the list.
  • The carrier or coating, which may still be an oil even in a gummy.
  • Where the cannabinoid entry sits. In a long list, “hemp extract” or “cannabidiol” is a single line among many, and its position tells you it is a minor component by weight — which is expected and not a problem.

If the position where an ingredient should be says “proprietary blend”, that is an absence of disclosure, and it is on the list in red flags on a CBD label.

The batch report

The certificate is read the same way in both formats — the walkthrough in how to read a certificate of analysis applies unchanged — but two fields behave differently.

The sample description. For an oil, the tested object is a liquid, and a report on the bulk oil is close to a report on the bottle. For a gummy, the finished product is a manufactured confection, and a report on the extract or on the pre-deposit slurry is a report on an input rather than on what you are holding. Check that the sample description names the finished product.

The units. Oils are commonly reported per volume or as a percentage by weight; gummies are commonly reported per piece or per unit weight. Comparing a figure in one unit against a figure in another is the easiest way in this category to be wrong by an order of magnitude, and it happens most often precisely when someone is comparing across formats. One thing to be clear about: a batch report describes the batch, sampled and measured at a point in time. It is not a certificate for the individual piece in your hand. That is true of a bottle too, but it feels less true when the product is discrete, so it is worth saying.

What does not change

  • The spectrum category. Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate describe the extract that went in, and they mean the same in a gummy as in a bottle — see full spectrum vs. broad spectrum and what CBD isolate means.
  • The THC rows and their detection limits. Read identically, with the same caution that “non-detect” is a statement about a method’s limit rather than a zero: why non-detect does not mean zero.
  • “THC-free” being an undefined phrase in either format: what “THC-free” can and cannot mean.
  • The batch number requirement. No batch number, nothing verifiable, in any format.
  • The claim rules. A condition name on a jar of gummies is the same problem it is on a bottle.
  • Anything to do with your own body or medication, which belongs to a pharmacist rather than to either label.

Reading either one

  1. Find the serving unit. Volume for an oil, piece count for gummies.
  2. Divide the front figure — by volume for an oil, by piece count for gummies.
  3. Establish whether the figure is CBD or total cannabinoids.
  4. Read the ingredients list in full, and for gummies specifically the gelling agent, the sweeteners and the allergen statement.
  5. Find the batch number and get the matching report.
  6. Check the sample description names the finished product.
  7. Match the units before comparing anything across formats.
  8. Check the cannabinoid spread against the category word on the front.
